How Much Should a Chilean SMB Spend on Digital Ads?

Published on July 17, 20266 min readBy Vanta Designs

A Chilean SMB can start with 2% to 5% of monthly revenue in digital ads as a Vanta Designs estimate. The budget should run for 90 days and be adjusted by margin, CAC, and close rate.

A Chilean SMB with no historical data can start by spending 2% to 5% of monthly revenue on digital ads, or a fixed amount it can sustain for 90 days. This is a Vanta Designs estimate, not an official benchmark: adjust it by margin, average order value, sales cycle, and lead-response capacity.

By Matias Valdivieso, Director, Vanta Designs. Updated: July 2026.

Key takeaways

  • The recommended starting range is a Vanta Designs estimate: 2% to 5% of monthly revenue for a 90-day test, reviewed weekly against CAC, ROAS, margin, and close rate.

  • The closest global reference is Gartner: average marketing budgets reached 7.8% of company revenue in 2026, according to CMO Spend in 2026, published June 25, 2026.

  • Gartner also reported that digital channels represented 61.1% of total marketing spend in its 2025 CMO Spend Survey, published June 2, 2025.

  • Google Ads calculates the monthly charging limit as average daily budget x 30.4 days, and daily spend may exceed the average daily budget by up to 2 times, according to Google Ads Help, accessed July 2026.

  • SMBs represent 97% of the companies covered by the ELE-7 from Chile's Ministry of Economy and INE, published December 27, 2024, so budgets should protect cash and learning rather than copy large-company behavior.

What is a reasonable starting budget for a Chilean SMB?

A reasonable starting point is 2% to 5% of monthly revenue, sustained for at least 90 days. This is a Vanta Designs estimate, based on two Gartner references: 7.8% of revenue as the average marketing budget in 2026, published June 25, 2026, and 61.1% of marketing spend in digital channels, published June 2, 2025. Multiplying those figures gives 4.8% of revenue as a large-company digital reference; for a Chilean SMB, the 2% to 5% range keeps the number inside a prudent test band. It is not an official or sector-specific rule. If the SMB earns CLP 20 million per month, the initial range would be CLP 400,000 to CLP 1,000,000 per month.

Why use a revenue percentage instead of only a fixed amount?

A revenue percentage keeps the SMB from copying budgets that do not fit its reality. The ELE-7 from Chile's Ministry of Economy and INE, published December 27, 2024, shows that micro, small, and medium-sized businesses represent 97% of the 409,300 companies the survey seeks to represent. That structure makes cash a real constraint: CLP 700,000 can be prudent for one company and excessive for another. A fixed amount controls monthly cash; a percentage compares investment with commercial capacity. An SMB investing 4% of revenue, with healthy gross margin and sales tracking, can scale more carefully than a company setting budget by intuition.

How should the budget be split between Google Ads and Meta Ads?

The split should follow purchase intent: Google Ads captures active demand, while Meta Ads helps create visual demand or recover visitors. For a first test, a simple mix can place 60% to 70% in the channel with clearer intent and 30% to 40% in the supporting channel. If the company sells urgent services, Google Search often starts with more weight; if it sells visual products, promotions, or discovery categories, Meta Ads can receive more budget. Meta Business Help says budgets can be set at the campaign or ad-set level and as daily or lifetime budgets, according to About budgets, accessed July 2026. That flexibility helps, but it does not replace a clear channel hypothesis.

What minimum budget does a 90-day test need?

The minimum should create enough data without putting operations at risk. In Google Ads, Manage your spend in Google Ads, accessed July 2026, explains that the monthly charging limit equals average daily budget x 30.4 days and that some days can spend up to 2 times the average daily budget through overdelivery. That means an SMB should not set a daily budget only from today's cash position; it should review the full monthly limit. For a small test, Vanta Designs recommends setting aside budget for 90 days, not one week: for example, CLP 300,000 per month to validate local messaging or CLP 1,500,000 per month for a more competitive category, as an adjustable estimate.

How do you know whether to raise or lower spend?

Spend should rise only when the channel produces economic signals, not just more clicks. Before increasing investment, the SMB should review four numbers: cost per lead or purchase, close rate, gross margin, and operational capacity to handle demand. If ROAS is positive but net margin falls, the spend may still be too high. If CAC falls and sales can respond quickly, increasing 10% to 20% per week is usually more controlled than doubling spend at once. The practical rule is to protect learning and cash: pause keywords, audiences, or ads that do not create qualified conversations, and move budget toward campaigns with verifiable conversion data in GA4, Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager, or the CRM.

Which mistakes make SMBs overspend?

Overspending usually starts with measuring the wrong signal. The most common mistakes are:

  • Confusing cheap clicks with profitable customers.

  • Launching campaigns without a landing page that explains price, coverage, timing, and proof.

  • Failing to answer leads within minutes, especially on WhatsApp.

  • Optimizing for forms when sales needs qualified calls.

  • Adding new campaigns before closing campaigns that do not convert.

Google Ads Help says the average daily budget can be edited at any time, according to About average daily budgets, accessed July 2026. That flexibility is useful when there is review discipline; without that discipline, it simply makes it easier to spend without learning. That is the point where professionally managed performance campaigns usually pay for themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official digital-ad budget benchmark for Chilean SMBs?
We did not find an approved source that publishes an official benchmark specifically for Chilean SMB digital ad spend. That is why this article uses a Vanta Designs estimate, based on the method shown above, and approved sources only for the base data.

Does the 2% to 5% range include agency fees?
Not necessarily. To compare results, separate media spend, agency fees, creative production, and tools. If they are mixed together, CAC can look better or worse than it really is.

When should a business spend more than 5% of revenue?
It can make sense when the company has strong margin, operational capacity, reliable attribution, and a campaign that is already converting profitably. Without those conditions, higher spend usually amplifies offer, follow-up, or closing problems.

What if the SMB is new or has low revenue?
Then the budget should start as a fixed amount that does not compromise cash. The company can use small campaigns to validate message, audience, and landing page while improving organic sales, referrals, and local presence. If you need help defining that first budget, you can write to our team.
