Domain, Hosting, and CMS: What They Are and Why You Pay for Them Every Year

Published on July 22, 20266 min readBy Matías Valdivieso

A domain is an annual name lease, hosting is the server storing your site, and a CMS is the software you use to edit it. Here's why none of the three is a one-time purchase, with real Chilean pricing.

A domain is a website's unique address (like example.cl), hosting is the server that stores the site's files, and a CMS is the software used to edit content without coding, such as WordPress or Shopify. All three are billed on a recurring basis because they are active infrastructure and licensing services, not one-time purchases.

Key takeaways

  • A .cl domain costs CLP $9,990 (VAT-exempt) per year through NIC Chile, the country's official registry.
  • The TLD (.cl, .com, .org) has almost no effect on Google rankings, except when it targets a specific country.
  • Google has confirmed HTTPS as a ranking signal since 2014, and the guidance still stands today.
  • If a domain isn't renewed in time, the owner loses it and anyone else can register it.
  • WordPress, Shopify, and Webflow are the most common CMS platforms for SMBs; none of them work without active hosting behind them.

What is a domain?

A domain is the unique name that identifies a site on the internet, like vantadesigns.com or miempresa.cl, functioning as an address that replaces the server's numeric IP. Registering a domain isn't a purchase, it's an annual lease of a name inside a shared registry. In Chile, NIC Chile, an entity run by Universidad de Chile, manages the .cl registry and charges CLP $9,990 (VAT-exempt) per year of coverage, a rate in effect since November 1, 2023. For generic domains such as .com, .net, or .org, the equivalent body is ICANN, which delegates registration to accredited registrars.

A common misconception is that the TLD (the domain ending) improves Google rankings. Google Search Central's own documentation clarifies that keywords in a domain name have hardly any ranking effect, and that the TLD only matters when a site targets a specific country, for example, a .cl domain for a business that sells only in Chile.

What is hosting?

Hosting is the server, physical or cloud-based, where a website's files, databases, and images actually live. Providers like AWS, Google Cloud, or DigitalOcean rent space in their data centers, with SSD storage for load speed, bandwidth, and a CDN (content delivery network) to speed up delivery across countries. Unlike a domain, which usually has a grace period after expiration, unpaid hosting takes a site offline immediately: without a server, there's nowhere to serve the content, even if the domain is still active.

Hosting also determines whether a site can run HTTPS (the browser's security padlock). Google confirmed in 2014 that HTTPS is a ranking signal in its search engine, and has recommended TLS certificates for every indexable site ever since. Getting this right, along with backups, security patches, and uptime monitoring, is part of the ongoing work behind good web design and IT support, not a one-time task.

What is a CMS?

A CMS (content management system) is the software used to create, edit, and publish site content without writing code: text, images, products, prices. WordPress (open source, requires its own hosting), Shopify and Wix (SaaS, with hosting bundled into the subscription), and Webflow are the examples most commonly used by SMBs in Chile. Google Search Central's documentation notes that some CMS platforms automatically generate technical elements like a sitemap or a page's HTML title, which simplifies SEO work.

A CMS is a separate layer from hosting: one is the editing software, the other is the server that software runs on. A poorly maintained WordPress install, missing security patches and backups, is one of the most common causes of hacked sites, because its popularity makes it a frequent target for automated bots scanning for outdated versions.

Why do you have to keep paying for all three?

Domains, hosting, and a CMS are active services, not finished products, and each has a distinct reason for billing on a recurring basis. A domain is an exclusive-use right over a name inside a registry shared by millions of sites: NIC Chile and ICANN charge annually to keep that registry current and to prevent the name from becoming available to someone else. According to Google Workspace's official help documentation, if a domain isn't renewed in time, its owner loses ownership and the name becomes available for anyone to register.

Hosting bills for continuous use of physical infrastructure: electricity, server cooling, bandwidth, and technical support aren't paid once, they're consumed month after month. And when the CMS is a SaaS platform like Shopify, the monthly fee bundles security updates, new features, and the hosting itself; when it's open source like WordPress, the recurring cost shows up in premium plugins, certificates, and the ongoing site maintenance that keeps it from becoming vulnerable. It's the same logic as renting an office: stop paying and you don't just lose the furniture, you lose the right to keep using the space.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a domain without hosting?
Yes. You can register and pay for a domain without an active site; there simply won't be anything to display until it's connected to hosting.

How much does it cost to maintain an SMB website in Chile per year?
The verifiable floor is the domain: CLP $9,990 (VAT-exempt) through NIC Chile. Hosting and CMS vary widely by provider; as a Vanta Designs estimate, not from an official source, a simple SMB site typically runs CLP $150,000 to $400,000 per year in total across all three services.

What happens if my domain expires?
Most registrars offer a grace period to renew before releasing the name to the public, but the exact window and terms vary by registrar and domain ending, so it's best to renew ahead of expiration rather than rely on that margin.

Do I need a CMS to have a website?
Not strictly, a site can be built with static code, but a CMS makes content editing accessible to non-technical teams, which in practice makes it nearly indispensable for SMBs.
