CAC is the cost of acquiring a new customer. For an SMB, it matters more than clicks or followers because it connects spend, sales, and margin.
What Is CAC and Why Is It the Metric That Matters?
CAC is the total cost of winning a new customer, including media, creative production, tools, and acquisition work. It matters because it shows whether a campaign can grow without destroying margin. An SMB should read CAC alongside average order value, gross margin, repeat purchase, and payback time.

Key takeaways
- CAC is not just cost per lead: it must connect paid acquisition cost with new paying customers and real margin.
- Google Analytics separates acquisition channels; Google Ads and Meta show that auctions depend on quality, relevance, and signals, not only bid.
- A practical Vanta Designs estimate reviews CAC against gross margin and payback before increasing spend.
How do you calculate CAC correctly?
CAC is calculated by dividing the full acquisition cost by the number of new customers won in the measured period. Include media spend, creative production, tools, agency or internal acquisition labor, and exclude retention costs when the question is new-customer acquisition. Google Analytics separates acquisition through default channel groups, according to Google Analytics Help, July 2026, which helps assign sales to Paid Search, Organic Search, Paid Social, and other sources. A performance marketing operation must close the gap between ad dashboards and real sales. If you divide Meta spend by forms only, you have lead CPA, not CAC. Valid CAC ends at a new paying customer.
Why does CAC matter more than clicks or followers?
CAC matters more because it connects marketing to cash, not surface attention. Meta explains that its auction considers bid, estimated action rates, and ad quality, according to Meta Business Help Center, July 2026; Google Ads uses Ad Rank for eligibility and position, according to Google Ads Help, July 2026. Those systems can produce cheap clicks that are not profitable customers. An SMB that watches only CTR, reach, or followers can celebrate activity while buying sales at negative margin. CAC forces the commercial question: what did it cost to acquire the customer, what margin did the customer leave, and can the same mechanism repeat without heavy discounts or unsustainable manual work?
What should a minimum CAC dashboard include?
A minimum CAC dashboard needs spend by channel, visits or sessions, qualified leads, new sales, revenue, gross margin, and CAC over a 30-day window. GA4 classifies traffic by channels, according to Google Analytics Help, July 2026, but the dashboard must connect that source with the CRM, ecommerce platform, or confirmed sales sheet. Importing clicks is not enough. For a Chilean SMB, the stack can stay simple: Google Ads, Meta Ads, Shopify or WooCommerce, GA4, and a confirmed-sales column. The important part is stable definitions. If renewals count as new customers one month and not the next, CAC loses value. Measurement inside performance campaigns starts with that hygiene.
What CAC range is acceptable for an SMB?
An acceptable CAC is one the business can recover inside its cash cycle while still leaving margin after fulfillment. There is no universal approved benchmark for Chile, so use this Vanta Designs estimate: in repeat-purchase ecommerce, CAC should usually stay below 25% to 35% of expected gross margin across the first or second purchase; in high-ticket services, a higher CAC can work if the contract pays back within 30 to 90 days. McKinsey wrote in 2023 that personalization can reduce customer acquisition costs by as much as 50% when executed well, according to McKinsey, 2023. Treat that as evidence of possible upside, not a guarantee.
How do you lower CAC without turning off growth?
Lower CAC by improving conversion quality before cutting budget. Google Ads says Ad Rank considers quality and context factors, according to Google Ads Help, July 2026, and Meta recommends diagnosing ads through quality, engagement-rate, and conversion-rate rankings, according to Meta Business Help Center, July 2026. In practice, check three levers: creative promise, landing page, and sales follow-up. If qualified visits do not buy, change the landing page and offer. If leads buy late, measure payback. If you need an outside view, book a CAC review with Vanta Designs.
What decision changes once CAC is known?
Knowing CAC changes the growth decision: you no longer ask whether a campaign created activity, but whether it can buy customers with repeatable margin. If CAC is below the acceptable margin threshold, test more budget or new audiences. If CAC exceeds margin, fix offer, landing page, or follow-up first. Meta recommends relevance diagnostics for underperforming ads, according to Meta Business Help Center, July 2026; Google Ads uses Ad Rank for eligibility and position, according to Google Ads Help, July 2026. Those signals help, but CAC decides whether scale is rational.
Frequently asked questions
Are CAC and CPA the same thing?
Not always. CPA measures the cost of a defined action, while CAC should include the full cost of acquiring new customers. Google Ads can optimize actions, but the business must connect those actions to real sales.
Why does CAC move every week?
Small accounts often see weekly movement because a few orders can change the average. Review CAC in 30-day windows and compare it with margin, not only with clicks or leads.
Can CAC improve only by cutting budget?
It can improve temporarily, but useful volume may disappear. Meta explains that its auction considers bid, estimated action rates, and ad quality, so creative, landing pages, and signals also affect cost.
